Choosing a window installer

The window is only half the job — a poor fit will undo even the best product. Choosing the right installer is the single biggest factor in a result you’ll be happy with for decades. Here is how to separate the professionals from the rest.

Check the accreditations

Reputable installers belong to recognised schemes, and it is worth verifying membership rather than taking a logo at face value. Look for FENSA or CERTASS registration — competent-person schemes that let a firm self-certify replacement windows against building regulations. TrustMark is a government-endorsed quality mark covering wider standards and dispute resolution. Membership of a trade body, and cover under an insurance-backed guarantee, are further reassurance that the firm operates properly and will stand behind its work.

Ask the right questions

Before you sign, ask each installer a consistent set of questions so you can compare fairly: How long have you traded, and are you FENSA or CERTASS registered? Are your fitters employed or subcontracted? What guarantee do you offer, and is it insurance-backed? Is my deposit protected? Who handles aftercare if something needs adjusting? Clear, confident answers are a good sign; vagueness or pressure to decide on the spot is not.

Read the quote carefully

A proper written quote should itemise the frames, glass specification, colour, hardware, the number of windows, removal and disposal of the old units, making good, and the guarantee. Be wary of a single lump sum with no detail, quotes that expire in 24 hours, huge “today only” discounts, or requests for a large cash deposit. Genuine firms are happy to give you time and put everything in writing. Our guide to getting quotes covers how to compare them line by line, and the guarantees guide explains what cover to expect.

Look at reviews and past work

Independent reviews and word of mouth tell you a lot about reliability, tidiness and aftercare — the things that matter once the deposit is paid. Ask to see recent local installations, and check feedback across more than one platform rather than relying on testimonials on the firm’s own site. If you would like to get matched with local window fitters and read verified reviews of installers, that partner site gathers feedback in one place. Taking half an hour over this step is time well spent.
